Long-term Commitment to Charities

RCM has a long association with the charitable sector having managed assets since the 1960s under the guise of one of our predecessor companies, Kleinwort Benson, a renowned name within the Charities investment sector.

RCM, itself, launched its first Chariguard Common Investment Funds (CIFs) in July 1994 designed specifically for assisting charities in protecting and building their investments in the most cost effective manner.

CIFs are unitised investment funds established under the Charities Act (1993). They are themselves registered charities. Following the recent Charities Act (2006), charities registered in Scotland and Northern Ireland join those registered in England and Wales in their eligibility to invest in Common Investment Funds. (Unless the power to do so is specially excluded in the Trust Deed of a charity.)

RCM’s Chariguard Investment Solutions offers charities options to invest in two passive index-tracker funds:

• Chariguard UK Equity Fund (benchmark: FTSE All Share)
• Chariguard Overseas Fund (benchmark: FTSE World (ex UK) WM Adjusted)

and a conventional fixed income fund investing in Gilts:

• Chariguard Fixed Interest Fund (benchmark: FTSE UK Government All Stocks Index)

All three funds, as CIFs, are not subject to stamp duty and distribute income gross, avoiding tax reclamation.

This service enables charities to benefit from a dedicated professionally managed investment service, using the Chariguard CIFs as building blocks to provide diversification and administrative efficiency. This service can be tailored to each charity’s individual requirements, such as their appetite for income, and can also include investments in RCM’s active equity products and PIMCO’s active fixed income products.

Since inception of these funds, RCM has developed a comprehensive track record and proven investment capability.

Choosing Passively Managed Funds
Investment need not be complicated. By providing passive funds, RCM aims to fulfil charities’ investment requirements while offering maximum diversification. Not only is this cost effective for charities, but in comparison to active managers there are other potential benefits:

• Active managers find it difficult to consistently beat the market after fees
• Choosing the right active manager is difficult. Ongoing monitoring is necessary with active managers due to the increased risks
• Active managers tend to charge higher fees
